Eastern Bluebirds are always joyful to watch, especially as when nesting. This pair already had nestlings in the box, evidenced by their non-stop efforts; a Bluebird would appear with an insect in it’s beak, disappear inside the nesting box, and emerge moments later to immediately launch in search of another. Nestlings are voracious, and it’s a full-time job for the parents to keep them fed.
In my experience, Bluebirds are cautious; they are very much aware of my presence, especially around their nesting location. I’m careful not to approach too closely, to avoid stressing them or worse, causing them to flee. But even at a respectful distance, they keep an eye on me – you can see it in some of the photos, the cocked head and the dark little eye gazing at me.
If not the same pair, then successive pairs have used this box several times a season over the past years, and I’m looking forward to admiring them again this year!
