Peck’s Skipper

The Skipper family of butterflies includes numerous members, many of which are common throughout Northeastern Pennsylvania and are regular visitors to the flowers in my garden.  The past few weeks, Peck’s Skippers have been regular diners at my alliums and milkweed, which are in full bloom.

Peck’s Skippers strike me as being spunky little guys – they’ll flit between flowers quickly, almost seeming to dance back and forth.  When there’s more than one of them present, they interact in a more complex dance of flight, which may be territorial or mating, or something else entirely – I cannot tell.

Yet at the same time, they are often patient and approachable.  The photos above were made with a mix of telephoto and macro lenses, shooting from a few feet way, and then from mere inches.
