Scrub oak is one of my favorite subjects in black and white. That isn’t a judgement on the species in color; its hues throughout the year are lovely, with shades of lush green through the summer and crisp yellows and oranges in the autumn. But there is something about the shape of its leaves, its tones, and the interplay of light and shadow, that just lends itself to black & white.
Fortunately, it’s pervasive throughout the pine barrens, so it’s never a struggle to find new compositions. I usually try them both ways, in color and monochrome, but more often that not find I prefer them better this way.
