Autumn on the Water

The Francis Walter Dam sits just south of the confluence of the Lehigh River and Bear Creek, a towering arc of concrete that holds back the waters in a two-armed lake that lies over flooded hillsides, lined with thick forest.  Although I’ve kayaked many artificial lakes – in truth, it sometimes feels like most of […]

Scranton in Autumn

For something different, a visit to downtown Scranton, PA, last autumn.  I am wholly and without doubt not a city person; too much concrete, too many people, and not enough trees for my taste.  However, on the smaller scale they can be interesting to visit, and good for a walk.  Mandy and I spent an […]

Autumn

The question of when autumn begins seems to raise strong opinions.  There’s the calendar date, which in my opinion falls too early, when the days still have that long, hazy, hot summertime feel. I’ll acknowledge that September is technically an autumn month, but perhaps that’s the true issue: there’s the factual, quantitative definition, and then […]

Summer Trails

Mid-summer and out looking for bugs, or birds, or basically any wildlife, and I caught this view of a hiking trail leading up through the field.  The sky was that shade of blue that is just irresistible, and I had the wide-angle prime in the bag, so…

Summer Morning

Summertime is painted in gold tones.  The light is warm, and so are the days, the temperature often rising too high for my taste.  Mornings are best, with golden light and cool air, the land coated in dew that rises as fog as the sun hits.

Promised Land Sunrise

Promised Land State Park is one of my favorite parks to visit, and every visit offers views or wildlife opportunities.  I’ve photographed there many times at sunrise, and although the angles are somewhat limited, I find that I never grow tired to capturing the sunrise over the marsh. In this case, the conditions were right […]

Dog Days

The days are long and hot, with humidity so thick that you can feel the air as a physical presence. Even the light is warm, especially as the shadows stretch out in the early evening. There was no respite in the woods – only heat and damp and deer flies, but also some scenes that […]
